Welcome to Coventry Rebuilt
This site is dedicated to the history of Coventry. The plan is to rebuild Coventry in a highly detailed computer model, with links back to potted histories of each building. The geographical limit of the project is confined to the city centre (City Walls/Ring Road). The project is a hobby run by me, Peter James Knight. Here’s a quick guide to the site:
- Home Page: latest posts and news of Coventry Rebuilt
- Time Machine: A 3D walkthrough of the city in development
- Histories: A potted history of each building, with searches via streets and building type
- Films & Photos: Films of Coventry Rebuilt, model images, photos/postcards of Coventry, Forgotten Faces – old portraits of people that lived in Coventry. History of the Lady Godivas
- About Coventry Rebuilt (CBR): How the project started
- Resources: Links to various useful historical online resources
- Contact: If you would like to contact me
If you have any suggestions on how the site can be improved, or a history that could be told, please feel free to contact me. If you would like to use any of the images or videos please see the usage policy – if in doubt, send me a message.
As for updates, this site will be continously updated and added to. I’m also on Facebook, YouTube and TikTok. I plan on using TikTok as a video blog, with hidden histories I discover as the project develops. In the near future, I will be setting up a Patreon Page for a blog on how the model is developing.
I’m also keen to hear your views on AI (survey at the bottom of this page). There is a lot of AI slop out there, and I don’t want to contribute to the slop pond. However, texturing the model is very complicated and time-consuming. That is partly why the model hasn’t been textured to date. However, AI is a very powerful tool if used correctly. The images below are of poor-quality photographs from the newspapers of the Rex Cinema. I have used AI to enhance them. Also, I have rendered the model of Owen Owen and Boots using AI. It would take a long time to achieve these results if done by hand. What are your thoughts?
With the Coventry Rebuilt Time Machine, the technology is developing where the model may be rendered in real time – or at least assist in texturing. The images below are to illustrate how AI can get it wrong but look convincing.
I would like to hear from you, so please vote at the bottom of this page.
